Categories in Magento Store Will Not Display

I installed Magento, and set up my categories through the admin panel. Then, I opened my browser to view my categories, but they were nowhere to be found. Through trial, error, and tips from from some very kind Magento experts, I was able to get them to display. Here is what I discovered.

  1. To create your categories, log into the admin panel, hover over “Catalog” in the main menu across the top of the page, and choose “Manage Categories”.
  2. If you are not taken automatically to the “New Root Category” screen, click “Add Root Category” from the menu on the left.
  3. Create a new root category. This root category will not be displayed on your store, it is just basically a container for your actual categories. On the “General Information” tab, enter a “Name” and choose “Yes” under “Is Active”. Then click “Save Category” in the upper right corner.
  4. Now, click on your newly-made root category in the menu on the left. Then, click “Add Subcategory” from the menu on the left.
  5. Create your categories that you want to appear on the website, making sure to set the following options for each of them:
    • On the “General Information” tab, “Is Active” and “Include in Navigation Menu” should both be “Yes”
    • When you are done adding your information to all four tabs, click “Save Category” in the upper right corner
  6. Next, hover over “System” in the main menu across the top of the page, and choose “Manage Stores”.
  7. Click on “Main Website Store” (or whatever your main store’s name is in the “Store Name” column).
  8. Under “Root Category”, choose your new root category that you created above, and then click “Save Store”.
  9. Check the top of your admin panel window to see if you need to refresh the cache or rebuild an index.
  10. View your store through a web browser, and you should now be able to see your categories.

    1. Have you checked to make sure your template displays the categories on the homepage? Also, have you made sure the categories are active and that the products within the categories are active and listed as out of stock?
